Niger Assembly Raises Alarm Over Terrorists Occupying Key Military Training Camp

The Niger State House of Assembly has raised urgent concerns over the reported takeover of the Nagwamase Military Cantonment in Kontagora by terrorists, forcing out about 23 surrounding farming communities. The Assembly claims the gunmen have established at least eight camps within the area, posing a severe security threat to both Kontagora and Mariga local government areas.

The Nagwamase Military Cantonment, one of Nigeria’s largest military training facilities, serves as a key base for the Nigerian Army Artillery Corps. However, according to Abdullahi Isah, the member representing Kontagora II State Constituency, the facility and its surrounding areas have now become a haven for terrorists who have been terrorizing local communities with frequent attacks and abductions. Speaking during a plenary session on Tuesday, Isah emphasized the escalating threat posed by the gunmen, highlighting the impunity with which they operate.

In response, the Assembly urged the Niger State Government to collaborate urgently with military authorities to reclaim the camp and restore peace to the region. Lawmakers also recommended that the government provide full support to the military to secure the area, enabling displaced communities to return to their homes.
