The Government of Japan has denied reports suggesting that it plans to introduce a special visa regime for Nigerian artisans.
In a statement released by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Asian nation clarified that despite designating certain cities as “Home Towns” for Nigerian communities, no special immigration measures are being considered.
Japan’s Position on Immigration
The Japanese government stressed that no policy exists to create a special visa category for skilled Nigerians or any African nationals.
“There are no plans to take measures to promote the acceptance of immigrants or issue special visas for residents of African countries. The series of reports and announcements concerning such measures are not true,” the ministry stated.
Background to the Rumors
Speculation followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s participation at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), where Japan announced four cities — including Kisarazu, about five kilometers from Tokyo — as “Home Towns” for Nigerians and citizens of three other African countries.
The Nigerian presidency later issued a statement claiming that Japanese authorities would establish a special visa category for artisans from Nigeria. However, the Japanese government has now firmly dismissed those claims.
Implications for Nigerians
While the “Home Town” designation reflects cultural ties and community recognition, the absence of a special visa program means Nigerians seeking opportunities in Japan must continue to apply through existing visa categories.
