Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma Chapter, on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest over the Federal Government’s failure to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement and other unresolved issues affecting the Nigerian university system.
Protest in Compliance with ASUU National Directive
The rally, held within the university’s main campus and at the institution’s main gate, was in compliance with a directive from the ASUU National Executive Council (NEC).
Chanting solidarity songs, the lecturers demanded urgent government intervention to address long-standing concerns threatening the stability of public universities in Nigeria.
Issues Raised by the Union
Among the key demands highlighted during the protest were:

Conclusion and signing of the FGN-ASUU 2009 Agreement

Payment of withheld or outstanding staff salaries

Settlement of promotion arrears and the 25–35% wage increase

Rejection of the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF), which ASUU described as objectionable
AAU Leadership Speaks
Addressing the protesting lecturers, the ASUU-AAU Chapter Chairman, Dr. Cyril Onogbosele, urged the Federal Government to urgently resolve all pending issues.
“These issues must be addressed without further delay to reposition our public universities and improve the working conditions of staff,” Onogbosele said.
The Bureau News notes that this protest adds to the growing pressure on the Federal Government to resolve the long-standing FG-ASUU impasse, which has fueled strikes and disruptions in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
