Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, has signed into law the creation of 13 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), a move he described as historic and crucial for accelerating grassroots development.
The bill, earlier approved by the Gombe State House of Assembly, formally establishes the LCDAs alongside the state’s existing 11 constitutionally recognized local government areas.
Strengthening Grassroots Governance
Governor Yahaya explained that the new LCDAs are designed to bring government closer to the people while focusing on security, basic education, primary health care, and agriculture — sectors critical to rural transformation.
“This is a seal for development and an opportunity to take transformational change to the grassroots, ensuring that citizens feel the real dividends of democracy,” Yahaya said while assenting to the law.
Public Input and Legislative Backing
The initiative followed a series of public hearings and debates in the state assembly, where citizens and stakeholders contributed to shaping the creation of the LCDAs.
Supporters believe the reform will expand access to government services, strengthen rural governance, and create opportunities for inclusive development in the North-East state.
Gombe Joins States with LCDAs
With the signing of this law, Gombe joins the growing number of Nigerian states adopting Local Council Development Areas as a strategy to accelerate development.
