In response to a violent incident near its campus, Plateau State University, located in Bokkos Local Government Area, has been temporarily shut down. The closure came after gunmen attacked the nearby Chikam community on Friday, tragically resulting in the death of a 200-level student from the university.
Yakubu Ayuba, the university’s Registrar, announced the institution’s immediate closure through a statement issued on the same day as the attack. Highlighting the profound impact of the incident on the university community, Ayuba explained, “Following the sad incident that occurred in Plateau State University Bokkos and the surrounding community on Friday, 19 April 2024, and because of the psychological effects of the unfortunate incidents on the students and staff of the university, the management has taken the painful decision to close the university for ten days with effect from today, 19th April 2024.”
The shutdown is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the students and staff while allowing the local security forces time to stabilize the area. As a result of the closure, all ongoing first semester examinations have been suspended and are scheduled to resume on Thursday, 2nd May 2024.
In an effort to assist students affected by the closure, the university management has arranged transportation to help stranded students relocate. “Management has made available buses to convey students who may be stranded from the university to Barkin Ladi today, Friday, 19th April 2024,” Ayuba added.
The governor of Plateau State has called for enhanced security measures in the wake of the attack, stressing the importance of safeguarding educational institutions and their communities. The local authorities are reportedly stepping up efforts to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of all residents in the region.
