A severe measles outbreak has tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 40 children in Adamawa State, located in Northeast Nigeria. According to reports from The Bureau Newspaper, the affected areas include Mubi North and Gombi local government areas, where 23 and 19 deaths have been recorded respectively.
Sources within the state’s Primary Healthcare Development Agency disclosed that there are currently over 200 children infected with the disease in these regions. The situation has raised significant concern among local health authorities and the community.
In addition to the measles outbreak, there is also a suspected case of polio in Gombi, further complicating the public health challenge in the area. In response to the dual health crisis, a team of medical workers has been dispatched to the affected communities to manage and contain the outbreaks.
Felix Tangwami, the state health commissioner, confirmed the outbreak and mentioned that further details, including the specifics of the mortalities, will be provided in a press briefing scheduled for tomorrow, to be addressed by the deputy governor.
The health authorities are expected to outline their immediate response strategies and possibly detail measures to prevent further spread of the diseases among the vulnerable populations in Adamawa State.
