The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have declared a 14-day ultimatum for a nationwide strike directed at the Federal Government.
The cause of their dissatisfaction stems from the failure to enact the 16-point agreement reached with the government on October 2, 2023, by the organized labour groups, NLC and TUC.
The leadership of both NLC and TUC have expressed disappointment that despite their attempts to maintain industrial harmony, the government appears indifferent to the widespread distress and economic difficulties facing the populace.
The agreement made on October 2 was aimed at mitigating the severe socioeconomic impacts resulting from the poorly implemented advice from the IMF/World Bank to increase the price of PMS (Petrol Motor Spirit) and devalue the naira. As predicted, these policies have led to severe financial strain for the general population and workers.
In their statement, the NLC and TUC expressed regret over being forced into a position where taking drastic measures seems necessary due to the government’s continuous disregard for the wellbeing of its citizens and the workers, coupled with the escalating hardships.
Starting from February 9 (the following day), among other demands, the two labor organizations have stressed the urgency of the situation and the critical need to safeguard the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens. Thus, they have issued a firm demand to the Federal Government to fulfill its obligations as per the agreement within 14 days starting from February 9, 2024.
