Reactions after the Emir of Kano claimed that a governor who followed sharia stole public funds and purchased a hotel in Lagos.
Social media users have responded in a number of ways to the statement made by Muhammadu Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, that one of the governors enforcing sharia misappropriated public monies and purchased a hotel in Lagos.
Speaking on Sunday during a virtual Ramadan lecture, Emir Sanusi made the claim. Speaking on the subject of “Some Dimensions of the Concept of Ibadah,” the Emir of Kano stated that while some individuals claim to be worshippers of the Almighty Allah, they are actually involved in social evils like corruption, greed, and selfishness.
According to Emir Sanusi, certain governors claimed to be spearheading the application of Sharia law, but in reality, they were robbing banks and purchasing hotels.

“Some state governors have claimed to be leading the application of sharia, practicing sharia, and plundering money to purchase hotels. In a state where sharia was being implemented, a governor embezzled public funds and purchased a hotel in Lagos.”
Sanusi: Greater evils than homosexuality are greed and wickedness.
The 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, claims that gambling, homosexuality, and illegal sex are “much lesser sins” than avarice, selfishness, and envy.
During a virtual Ramadan lecture on Sunday titled “Some dimensions of the concept of ibadah,” Sanusi gave a guest lecture.
According to the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), some Muslims fail to remember that they will account to God for their deeds, which contributes to the social disorder in the nation.
People fast and pray, he continued, but they still do terrible deeds “because our hearts are not Islamic.”
Sanusi said that a governor of a Nigerian state that implemented sharia had embezzled money and used it to purchase a hotel in Lagos.
Sanusi stated his state remained a “very serious example of backwardness” without naming the governor.
“How do you elevate a Muslim to the position of governor or minister when all he can think about is robbing the government to build a mansion for himself or amass billions for his offspring while denying people?”
There have even been state governors who have claimed to be directing the application of sharia, practicing sharia, plundering money, and purchasing hotels.
“In a state where sharia was being implemented, a governor embezzled public monies and used them to purchase a hotel in Lagos. Then he exclaims, Allahu Akbar.
In the meantime, his state was left with one of the worst security situations and the worst instances of backwardness, along with no access to healthcare or education.
“Evil, greed, selfishness, and jealousy. These are far more serious transgressions than gambling, homosexuality, and zina (illegal sex). More than the sins of the body are the sins of the heart. We give too much attention to the outside world.
The absence of these qualities includes our hearts’ purity, our love for people, our fear of Allah, and our awareness of our responsibility to Him.
Sanusi added, “Some of the problems that we are facing today have been caused by the misinterpretation of some Islamic teachings.”
He urged Muslims to provide an example for people to follow in the ensuing centuries.
