BREAKING: APC Secures Absolute Majority in Senate as Bauchi Senator Defects from PDP

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured an absolute two-thirds majority in the Nigerian Senate following the defection of Senator Samaila Dahuwa, representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
With the latest defection, the APC now holds 73 of the 109 Senate seats, while the PDP controls 27 seats, the Labour Party 4, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) 2, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) 1, and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) 1.
This new composition gives the ruling party a supermajority, a critical political milestone that significantly alters the legislative balance of power in favour of the executive arm of government.
APC Achieves Two-Thirds Threshold
Under the provisions of Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), a two-thirds majority is the required threshold for passing constitutional amendments, impeachment resolutions, and approving key executive policies or bills.
With this development, the APC can now pass executive bills, budgets, and critical legislation without depending on opposition votes, a shift that may reduce legislative resistance to government initiatives and strengthen policy implementation under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
‘Decision Made After Consultations’ — Senator Dahuwa
Speaking on his defection, Senator Samaila Dahuwa explained that his decision followed extensive consultations with political leaders, stakeholders, and constituents across Bauchi North.
“Prolonged internal divisions and lack of strategic direction within the PDP have continued to undermine collective progress and effective representation. My move to the APC is based on conviction and the need to contribute to a government that prioritizes stability, unity, and development,” he said.
Senator Dahuwa reaffirmed his confidence in the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the APC as the vehicle through which he hopes to contribute to national unity and economic progress.
Political Implications
The APC’s dominance in both chambers of the National Assembly marks a defining shift in Nigeria’s democratic landscape. With the Senate now firmly under its control, analysts say the ruling party will find it easier to align legislative priorities with executive objectives — though critics warn this could erode institutional checks and balances.
Meanwhile, PDP insiders are reportedly holding emergency consultations to prevent further defections, amid growing concerns about internal leadership and cohesion.
