How Ondo SDP Ex-Governorship Candidate Bamidele Akingboye Died Amid Balcony Push Allegations
Nigeria News Today – Fresh controversy has trailed the sudden death of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the November 2024 Ondo governorship election, after a source alleged that one of his wives pushed him from a balcony at his Lagos residence.
Akingboye, 60, reportedly died on Wednesday at his Victoria Garden City (VGC) home in Lagos. His personal assistant and media adviser, Oyeniyi Iwakun, had earlier announced the death, describing him as “a man of unwavering integrity, an accomplished businessman, philanthropist, visionary leader, and community builder who lived a fulfilled life.”
Allegations of Domestic Violence
While the family’s initial announcement described the death as peaceful, a source on Saturday claimed otherwise, insisting that Akingboye was a victim of domestic violence.
“The SDP candidate in Ondo State who recently died was killed by his wife. She allegedly killed him by pushing him off the balcony,” the source told SaharaReporters.
Disturbing images circulating online showed bruises and deep cuts on the late politician’s head and neck, further fueling suspicions.
Police Launch Investigation
The Nigeria Police have confirmed that a discreet investigation is underway to uncover the truth behind Akingboye’s death. Authorities assured the public that no stone would be left unturned.
Activists, civil society groups, and concerned Nigerians have also demanded transparency, warning against attempts to cover up the real circumstances of his passing.
Political Career and Legacy
Akingboye, fondly called OBA, was the CEO of Benshore Maritime, CEO of Clog Oil Systems, and President of WeAfrica Group. He also held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland.
In the 2024 Ondo governorship election, he contested under the SDP platform against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the APC, Agboola Ajayi of the PDP, and other candidates.
Until his death, he was widely respected for his philanthropy, including sponsorship of community projects, youth empowerment initiatives, and financial assistance to the less privileged.
He is survived by wives, children, grandchildren, and siblings.
