Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, has reclaimed his position following high-level political interventions.
Political Leaders Intervene
Obasa’s return follows a series of meetings involving key figures in the All Progressives Congress (APC), including:
- Chief Bisi Akande (Former APC National Chairman)
- Chief Olusegun Osoba (Former Governor of Osun State)
- Dr. Muiz Banire (Former Commissioner for Justice)
- Governance Advisory Council (GAC) members
Sources indicate that the APC leadership deemed Obasa’s impeachment illegal and directed lawmakers to reinstate him.
Security Details Restored
Signs of Obasa’s reinstatement emerged when his security details were restored, while those of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda—who replaced him as Speaker—were withdrawn.
Meranda, the first female Speaker in Lagos Assembly history, had adjourned plenary indefinitely two weeks ago after a DSS invasion caused commotion in the Assembly.
Obasa Declares His Return
On Thursday, Obasa arrived at the Assembly complex, escorted by police and State Security Service (SSS) personnel, and declared his return.
“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” he announced.
With this latest development, the leadership of the Lagos Assembly remains in turmoil, as Meranda’s official resignation has yet to be confirmed.
