Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Nasiru Idris, has called on the Federal Government to establish a Nigerian Air Force base in the state to tackle the rising wave of terrorism and cross-border banditry.
Speaking while receiving the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, on a courtesy visit to Government House, Birnin Kebbi, on Sunday, Governor Idris said the move was necessary due to the incursion of Lakurawa bandits from neighbouring Niger and Benin Republics, as well as from Sokoto, Zamfara, and Niger States.

“Kebbi is strategic. We share borders with Niger and Benin Republics. Before now, we enjoyed peace, but the infiltration of Lakurawa bandits has led to a series of deadly attacks,” the governor stated.
He stressed that safeguarding Kebbi was not only vital for the state but also for national security and the protection of Nigeria’s borders.
Air Chief Backs Call for Stronger Security Measures
Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar agreed that ensuring peace in Kebbi was crucial for national stability. He noted that his visit aimed to assess the operational readiness of Air Force personnel and gather firsthand information on their activities in the region.
“Security is the bedrock of development. Without a safe environment, meaningful progress cannot be achieved,” Abubakar emphasized, assuring deeper collaboration with the Kebbi State Government.
Kebbi’s strategic location and proximity to two international borders make it a key security priority for Nigeria. The governor’s appeal underscores growing concerns about cross-border criminal activities and the need for stronger military presence to protect lives and property.
