In Nigeria News Today, The Bureau News reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) detention of former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
Atiku, in a statement shared on Monday, accused the Tinubu-led administration of weaponising the fight against corruption to intimidate and weaken opposition figures. He described Tambuwal’s arrest as a continuation of a broader agenda to coerce opposition leaders into joining the ruling party.
“The only reason the EFCC has detained the former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, is because he is a member of the opposition coalition,” Atiku said. “We are living witnesses to a growing trend where the state and its operators have assumed the role of a bully, using corruption allegations as a political agenda.”
The former presidential candidate alleged that the EFCC’s current operations reflect a troubling pattern — opposition politicians are targeted with corruption allegations, only to have their cases dropped once they align with the government’s political objectives.
Atiku further criticised the administration for undermining the very institutions he says he worked to strengthen during his time in government.
“That is not how to fight corruption, and certainly not how to build institutions,” he stressed. “Such tendencies only encourage corruption to thrive.”
He also warned of a creeping shift towards one-party dominance, urging Nigerians, civil society groups, and the international community to resist what he termed “anti-democratic machinations.”
“Our assurance to Nigerians is that we will never succumb to these efforts to railroad our people into a one-party dictatorship,” Atiku declared.
