Sokoto Government Warns of New Terror Group LAKURAWAS in Five LGAs

The Sokoto State government has raised concerns over the emergence of a new terror group, known as LAKURAWAS, operating across five local government areas in the state.

The state’s Deputy Governor, Idris Mohammed Gobir, brought attention to the alarming rise of the group during a meeting with participants from Course 33 of the National Defence College (NDC) Abuja, who were on a study tour in Sokoto.

Describing LAKURAWAS as “a faith-based group with idealistic views,” Gobir warned that the organization possesses sophisticated weaponry, and reports of criminal activity have surfaced in various parts of the state.

“This unsettling development has emerged at a time when the state is already grappling with persistent banditry,” the deputy governor stated.

In response to the growing threat, Gobir assured that the state government is working closely with federal security agencies to protect the lives and property of residents in affected areas. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to counter security challenges in Sokoto and expressed optimism that the NDC’s study tour would yield valuable insights for managing and improving the state’s security landscape.

Heading the NDC delegation, Air Vice Marshal Titus Zuwahu Dauda shared that the National Defence College—Nigeria’s foremost military training institution since its establishment in 1992—focuses on preparing senior officers from the military, police, and strategic agencies for high-level roles.

According to Dauda, the NDC has produced 2,982 graduates to date, including participants from 30 African and Asian nations. Following their tour, the NDC team will present their findings to the Sokoto State government in both oral and written reports.
