ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Nigerian Senate was deeply moved on Tuesday as Senator Isah Jibrin Echocho (APC, Kogi East) passionately highlighted the urgent security and humanitarian crisis in Kogi State following recent violent attacks in Omala Local Government Area, allegedly carried out by herdsmen.
Senator Echocho brought the motion before the Senate, urgently calling for relief and intervention for his constituents who have been severely affected by the attacks. “We are facing a dire situation in Omala,” Echocho asserted. “Lives have been lost, homes destroyed, and many of my constituents are now displaced, living in fear and uncertainty.”
In response to his appeal, the Senate observed a minute of silence to honor those who lost their lives in the attacks. Additionally, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was directed to provide immediate relief materials to the affected residents, many of whom are now in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.
The Senate also resolved to establish an ad-hoc committee tasked with organizing a national summit to investigate the ongoing issue of farmers-herders clashes. This summit aims to bring together stakeholders to develop comprehensive recommendations for further legislative action to address the root causes of the conflict and find sustainable solutions.
Senator Echocho’s heartfelt plea underscores the critical need for swift and effective measures to ensure the safety and well-being of his constituents. His advocacy serves as a reminder of the pressing challenges faced by communities in Kogi State and the necessity for coordinated efforts to bring about lasting peace and stability.
“The people of Omala need our support now more than ever,” Echocho emphasized. “It is our duty to ensure that they receive the protection and assistance they desperately need in these trying times.”
