Barely 24 hours after Boko Haram insurgents attacked Gwoza Local Government Area, killing two Civilian Joint Task Force members and 10 firewood scavengers, tragedy struck again in Borno State.
No fewer than eight people lost their lives, and three others sustained varying degrees of injuries following an improvised explosive device (IED) blast planted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area.
According to sources, the deadly explosion occurred around 11:00 am when a convoy of vehicles travelling from Rann, the headquarters of Kala-Balge Local Government, to Gamboru Ngala hit the IED near Furunduma village, approximately 11 kilometers from Rann.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the victims included women and children. Some reports, however, suggest that the casualty figures could be higher, with claims that over 20 people may have been killed in the attack.
Both Gamboru Ngala and Kala-Balge share borders with Cameroon, a region that has suffered repeated deadly assaults from terrorist groups over the years.
Efforts to reach the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, for official confirmation were unsuccessful as of press time.
The latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing Nigeria’s northeast region and the urgent need for strengthened counter-insurgency efforts.
