A devastating event unfolded in Irete Autonomous Community, Owerri West Council Area of Imo State, as a local businessman, Mr. Henry Ejiogu Ogbuji, fell victim to suspected kidnappers’ violence. The incident, occurring on the night of Friday, February 23, 2024, has sent shockwaves through the community.
Henry Ejiogu Ogbuji, a respected pharmacist known for his drug sales at Owerri Plaza, met a tragic end when he attempted to rescue his elder brother, Mr. Sunny Ogbuji, from the clutches of his abductors. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants had stormed Sunny Ogbuji’s residence on Obinwanne street in Umuohia Irete, forcibly taking him away.
Upon learning of the kidnapping, Henry rushed in pursuit of the kidnappers, hoping to intercept them along the road leading to the Owerri/Onitsha Expressway at Umungada junction. However, the situation took a dire turn when the kidnappers, realizing they were being followed, shot Henry in the chest, leading to his immediate death. Miraculously, amidst the chaos, Sunny Ogbuji managed to escape from his captors.
The Imo State Police Command, through its spokesperson ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident and assured the public of their dedication to apprehending those responsible. The police have vowed to ensure that the perpetrators face justice, signaling an ongoing investigation into the matter.
The remains of Henry Ejiogu Ogbuji have been transferred to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri’s morgue, as the community mourns the loss of a beloved member.
