The passing of the Emir of Zuru, Major-General Muhammadu Sani Sami Gomo II, has not only plunged Kebbi State into mourning but also revealed the compassionate and uncommon qualities of Governor Nasir Idris.
Governor Idris’s Response to the Emir’s Illness
Leadership is often best measured during times of crisis. For Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu), the illness and eventual passing of the revered Emir of Zuru became a moment that showcased his commitment, empathy, and respect for traditional institutions.
When news broke that the late Emir required urgent medical treatment in London, Governor Idris promptly approved all financial requirements as requested by the State Council of Chiefs. Despite this intervention, destiny prevailed, and the Emir passed on while the governor was at the hospital in London to personally check on his condition.
A visibly saddened Governor Idris then oversaw the release and transportation of the Emir’s remains back to Nigeria. He immediately briefed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu about the development and dispatched a high-powered delegation led by the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly to Zuru to oversee burial preparations and receive condolence visitors.
Honouring the Emir in Death
Governor Idris later returned to Nigeria and joined top dignitaries—including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Etsu Nupe Yahaya Abubakar, and many other traditional rulers and politicians—for the funeral prayers at the Zuru Central Mosque.
Those familiar with the cordial relationship between the governor and the late Emir were not surprised at the honour accorded to the monarch. Governor Idris had been a close ally of the Emir, often consulting with him on issues affecting the emirate, including infrastructural deficits and inter-communal harmony.
Legacy of Mutual Respect
The Emir had previously conferred on Governor Idris the prestigious traditional title of Garkuwan Zuru, a recognition of his commitment to the emirate. In return, Governor Idris consistently ensured Zuru benefited from state projects and programmes, including reviving the abandoned Koko–Zuru federal road project.
The bond between the two leaders was rooted in mutual respect, cultural understanding, and a shared vision for the emirate’s development.
A Lasting Impact
While the late Emir of Zuru will be remembered for his service and contributions to peace and development, Governor Nasir Idris’s actions during his illness and death highlight a new standard of leadership built on empathy, accountability, and respect for tradition.
The governor’s demonstration of loyalty and responsibility has further strengthened his image as a leader who values both the welfare of his people and the dignity of traditional rulers.
