In a major step toward reinforcing democratic values and legal accountability, the Kano State Government and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ungogo Branch, have agreed to work together to strengthen the rule of law and enhance access to justice in the state.
This renewed partnership was announced at the opening of the 2025 Law Week, themed “The Rule of Law in a Democratic Society,” which brought together legal professionals, policymakers, and civil society actors at a high-level event in Kano.
State Government Reaffirms Commitment to Legal Reforms
Speaking at the event, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) outlined the administration’s recent efforts to overhaul the justice sector, including:
-
The recruitment of 70 new state counsels,
-
Ongoing capacity-building programmes for legal officers, and
-
Provision of modern office infrastructure and equipment.
He further stressed the importance of judicial independence, constitutional adherence, and protecting the rights of the vulnerable, including women, children, and those in conflict with the law.
NBA Ungogo Pushes for Democratic Accountability
On his part, the Chairman of NBA Ungogo Branch emphasized the centrality of the rule of law to democratic governance.
“The rule of law is the soul of any genuine democracy,” he stated.
“Without it, the rights of citizens are trampled and the balance of power lost.”
The branch also highlighted key achievements such as:
-
Advocacy for prison decongestion,
-
Human rights protection campaigns, and
-
The launch of its official publication, The Ungogo Bar Voice.
Looking ahead, the NBA plans to organize a “Law and Order Summit” aimed at addressing insecurity and youth restiveness in Kano and northern Nigeria.
Shared Vision: A Lawful and Just Society
Both the Kano State Government and the NBA pledged to continue working together to promote democratic values, enforce constitutional order, and defend citizen rights across the state.
“Our shared goal is a just and lawful society, where every citizen—regardless of status—has equal access to justice, and state power is properly checked,” the SSG affirmed.
Stakeholders Rally for Legal Transformation
The 2025 Law Week is expected to serve as a platform for critical dialogue, legal networking, and collaboration across the justice sector in Kano. It reflects growing recognition of the role of law in peacebuilding, development, and good governance.
