Labour Party chieftain Datti Baba-Ahmed has alleged that insecurity in Nigeria was deliberately fueled as a political weapon to weaken former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration and pave the way for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to assume power.
Speaking during a live appearance on Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed argued that the escalation of violence and instability ahead of the 2015 elections was not accidental but rather part of a calculated strategy.
“The desperation to unseat Jonathan fuelled insecurity in Nigeria. It became a political tool, and the consequences are still with us today,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed’s remarks come shortly after former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai claimed that the Federal Government was paying bandits, a revelation that has reignited public debate over the government’s approach to tackling violent groups across the country.
He insisted that instead of genuinely addressing insecurity, certain political forces capitalized on it to achieve electoral victories, leaving communities to bear the long-term consequences of violence, kidnappings, and banditry.

Security analysts note that Nigeria continues to grapple with insurgency, banditry, and separatist unrest a decade after Jonathan’s exit, raising questions about whether political manipulation of insecurity has entrenched deeper instability.
