The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has officially reassigned the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to another judge.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, disclosed this development in a statement on Saturday, noting that his client remains ready to face trial as he believes in his innocence.
Ejimakor revealed that the legal team received two significant letters before their routine visit to Kanu. The first was from the Chief Justice of Nigeria in response to their earlier request for administrative intervention following the recusal of the previous judge handling the case. The second letter, from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, confirmed the reassignment of the case to a new judge.
Reacting to this, Kanu expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice of Nigeria for her prompt action and to the general public for supporting his demand for a fair judicial process.
“For the past six months, since the recusal of the previous judge in September 2024, there have been serious concerns over threats to Kanu’s constitutional rights, particularly his right to a fair and speedy trial,” Ejimakor stated.
With the case now reassigned, Kanu and his legal team have vowed to focus on his defense and ensure that the trial proceeds according to the law.
The reassignment of the case marks a significant step in Kanu’s legal battle, which has remained a topic of national and international interest.
