The President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), Alhaji Shettima Yerima, has warned that the northern region might explore alternatives if President Bola Tinubu’s administration fails to address critical issues affecting the populace. Speaking in an interview with Saturday Vanguard, Yerima expressed dissatisfaction with certain government policies, particularly the tax reform bills, and outlined the expectations and concerns of the northern electorate.
Northern Discontent Over Tax Reform Bills
Yerima clarified that northern opposition to the tax reform bills does not stem from an aversion to taxation but from a lack of proper consultation and inclusivity in the process. He argued that the government mishandled the presentation of the bills, making them appear anti-north.
“Taxation is essential for national development, but the manner of introducing these reforms was flawed. The government should have engaged with stakeholders through the National Assembly and ensured the people were consulted,” Yerima stated.
He emphasized that better communication and stakeholder engagement could mitigate resistance and ensure the bills gain public acceptance.
Disappointment with Tinubu’s Administration
Addressing broader dissatisfaction, Yerima noted that many northerners feel let down by the Tinubu administration, especially after high expectations following eight challenging years under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The north overwhelmingly supported Tinubu, hoping he would address insecurity, economic hardship, and corruption. While we understand the enormity of the challenges he inherited, the government must show empathy and implement palliative measures to alleviate the suffering of the masses,” he said.
Yerima warned that continued hardship could lead to a loss of trust in Tinubu’s leadership, urging the administration to make tangible improvements within the next two years.
Criticism of State Governors
Yerima didn’t spare state governors, accusing them of laziness and a lack of initiative. He criticized their reliance on federal allocations while neglecting their states’ potential for internal revenue generation.
“Some governors misuse federal funds, prioritize personal interests, and fail to invest in their states. This over-reliance on the federal government must stop. Decentralizing the federal structure would force states to become more productive and self-sufficient,” he asserted.
Yerima advocated for a system where states harness their resources, contribute a percentage to the center, and become financially independent, citing Lagos and Rivers states as examples of self-sustaining governance.
Call for Reforms and Accountability
Yerima called on Tinubu to focus on key areas such as security, economic relief, and anti-corruption efforts. He urged the government to hold individuals from past administrations accountable for looting public funds, emphasizing the need for justice and systemic reform.
“The fight against corruption must be taken seriously. Those who squandered the nation’s resources must face justice. This will restore public confidence and signal a commitment to accountability,” he said.
The Path Forward
Despite his criticisms, Yerima expressed hope that Tinubu could turn things around. He called on the president to deliver on his promises, particularly in addressing insecurity and economic challenges.
“The north does not hate Tinubu; the people are simply frustrated by certain policies. If he can address these issues, he will win back the hearts of the northerners. But if the pain persists, the region will have no choice but to seek alternatives,” Yerima concluded.
