In a major boost for women’s empowerment in Kebbi State, a women rights group, Mata Zalla, has trained and supported over 5,000 widows and divorcees to help them live more dignified and independent lives.
Speaking in Birnin Kebbi, the state coordinator of the group told The Bureau News that the initiative focused on improving the socio-economic conditions of vulnerable women.
“Women are economically weak, and if left without support, some men could exploit their condition and lure them into prostitution. That is why we are training and empowering them, so they can provide food and education for their children,” the coordinator explained.
Empowerment and protection
The group also provides protection against domestic violence, including rape and spousal abuse. With a membership base of over 8,000, Mata Zalla operates largely through self-sponsorship, while also receiving support from well-meaning individuals.
The Kebbi State First Lady, Hajia Nafisa Nasir Idris, was particularly praised for providing significant financial support, which made the training of widows and divorcees possible. The assistance was further extended to girl-child education initiatives and voter education campaigns across the state.
Voter education drive
The association carried out awareness campaigns across all 20 local councils in Kebbi, encouraging women in rural areas to register or renew their voter cards ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Call to action
The coordinator urged more women to join the association, stressing that its mission is to reduce hardship among vulnerable women and protect them from exploitation.
