Political activist and social commentator, Comrade Usman Okai Austin, has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing General Waidi Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff, describing him as a “no-nonsense officer” and a “strategic thinker” who will not disappoint Nigerians in his new role.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Okai praised the president’s choice as timely and well-considered, noting that General Shaibu’s wealth of experience in both field and strategic command positions makes him perfectly suited for the task of strengthening Nigeria’s internal and external security architecture.

Okai: Shaibu Is a Proven Professional

Okai recalled that Gen. Shaibu previously served as Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force (Operation Hadin Kai), where he led successful counterinsurgency operations in the Northeast. He described the new army chief as one of the most experienced and intellectually grounded officers in the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“Over three decades, he has earned a reputation as one of the Army’s most disciplined and forward-thinking officers. His appointment is that of a square peg in a square hole,” Okai stated.

National Cooperation Needed to End Insecurity

Okai urged Nigerians to give the new service chiefs their full support, stressing that national security requires joint cooperation among all arms of the security apparatus and the general public.

“Security cannot be left to one institution alone. With a capable Director of the SSS, Mr. Tosin Ajaye, and strong leadership in the Navy and Air Force, the time to decisively confront insecurity is now,” he said.

He added that President Tinubu’s coordinated approach across military and intelligence agencies offers a renewed opportunity to tackle banditry, insurgency, and terrorism more effectively.

Public Cooperation Key to Lasting Peace

Okai called on citizens to support the armed forces and security agencies through vigilance, intelligence sharing, and community cooperation.

“The military and security services cannot do it alone. Nigerians must play their part in ensuring peace and stability,” he said, commending the president’s renewed emphasis on professionalism and inter-agency synergy.

Okai concluded by expressing confidence that under Tinubu’s leadership and General Shaibu’s command, the Nigerian Army will consolidate on reforms to secure lives, property, and national unity.
