ADC Faults Federal Government Claims on Falling Food Prices — The Bureau News Nigeria News Today

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted the Federal Government’s claims that food prices are dropping due to increased local production, describing the assertion as “dishonest and misleading.”
In a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC accused the Tinubu-led administration of manipulating economic data and weaponising hunger for political purposes.
ADC Challenges Government’s Food Price Narrative
According to the statement obtained by The Bureau News, the ADC argued that the government’s narrative of food price stability does not reflect the realities faced by millions of Nigerians battling hunger and inflation.
“The ADC is deeply concerned about the Federal Government’s misleading narrative around the so-called drop in food prices. Contrary to what is being celebrated in official circles, the reality on the ground is that the Tinubu administration is manipulating food prices and weaponising hunger for political gains,” the party said.
The ADC maintained that insecurity, displacement of farmers, and high input costs—particularly fertiliser prices—have made it impossible for local food production to increase, contrary to government claims.
Party Cites Insecurity, Rising Costs as Root Causes
The statement lamented that farmers across northern Nigeria are unable to cultivate their lands due to banditry and displacement. Those still engaged in farming, the party noted, are struggling to buy fertilisers and other essential inputs due to inflation and limited access to credit.
“How can production be increasing when the rural economy is under siege by bandits, and the cost of planting is now beyond the reach of the average farmer?” the statement questioned.
It further described as “strange and dishonest” the government’s claims that its agricultural policies are driving domestic production at a time when insecurity remains a major threat to the food value chain.
ADC Warns Against “Artificial” Drop in Food Prices
The ADC alleged that the temporary drop in food prices is artificial and driven by import waivers that have flooded Nigerian markets with cheap foreign goods, rather than reflecting growth in domestic output.
“This is neither evidence of sound economic policy nor proof of increased local production. While it may temporarily reduce food prices, it comes at a heavy cost to local farmers who can no longer compete,” the party said.
The ADC urged the government to adopt a sustainable agricultural strategy that protects local producers, ensures fair market prices, and rebuilds rural economies through improved security and investment in farming inputs.
Call for a New Agricultural Strategy
According to The Bureau News, the ADC called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s agricultural policy to prioritise food sovereignty, farmer protection, and economic inclusion.
“Nigeria’s agricultural future cannot depend on import waivers and short-term political optics. We need a bold, long-term plan that restores confidence to local farmers and guarantees food security for all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
