Louvre Heist: Thieves Hit Apollo Gallery, Steal Eight ‘Priceless’ Crown Jewels; One Imperial Crown Recovered Damaged
Authorities in Paris have launched an organised-crime probe after a brazen daylight burglary at the Louvre Museum on Sunday, October 19, where thieves struck the Apollo (Apollon) Gallery—home to France’s royal gems and crown diamonds. One object—the imperial crown of Empress Eugénie—was dropped as the thieves fled and was later recovered outside the museum in damaged condition, according to French authorities.

The Paris prosecutor has entrusted the inquiry to the Brigade for the Suppression of Banditry (BRB), with support from France’s cultural-property police. The Ministry said the Louvre is rolling out a new security master plan under the “Louvre, Nouvelle Renaissance” programme—upgraded cameras, enhanced perimeter detection and a new security HQ among measures to harden the site.

The Apollo Gallery houses some of France’s most symbolic jewels. Experts warn that professional gangs often alter or dismantle stolen pieces to evade recovery, making rapid international cooperation crucial.
