DSS Alert Triggers Tight Security in Ondo, Kogi and Neighbouring States Over Suspected ISWAP Plot

ABUJA / AKURE / LOKOJA — States across the North-Central and South-West have stepped up surveillance after a Department of State Services (DSS) intelligence memo warned of “imminent attacks” allegedly planned by ISWAP in Ondo and Kogi.

The confidential advisory, addressed to the Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, and signed by H. I. Kana on behalf of the State Director of Security, listed Eriti-Akoko, Oyin-Akoko and Owo as possible targets. The DSS urged joint forces to increase patrols, harden vulnerable points and heighten early-warning measures.

Ondo: police deployments and calm appeal

Ondo Police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade said personnel have moved to identified flashpoints, adding, “Everyone is taking steps to ensure that no event takes us unawares.” Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, via Information Commissioner Idowu Ajanaku, urged residents to stay calm but vigilant: the leaked memo “forms part of routine intelligence sharing,” he noted, saying agencies are already acting on it.

Kogi: boundary security reinforced

In Kogi, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo ordered reinforcements around border communities. Information Commissioner Kingsley Fanwo said the alert shows agencies are “alive to their responsibilities,” adding that surveillance has been intensified and Kogi “remains one of the safest states.”

Spillover measures in Ekiti, Kwara, Osun, Ogun, Nasarawa, Kaduna

• Ekiti: Special Adviser on Security, Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana (rtd), said the state mobilised the Army, Amotekun, Agro Marshals, local hunters and vigilantes, with bush clearing underway to deny criminals concealment.
• Kwara: Police spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed intensified patrols and inter-agency intelligence operations, particularly along borders.
• Osun: Security Adviser Samuel Ojo said preventive steps and daily boundary monitoring predated the memo, with regular inter-state briefings involving Kogi, Ondo, Ekiti and Kwara.
• Ogun: Governor Dapo Abiodun’s aide on Information & Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, announced tighter security in border corridors and a “robust intelligence network” using local informants to intercept suspicious movements.
• Nasarawa: After a security council meeting chaired by Governor Abdullahi Sule, Police Commissioner Shetima Mohammed dismissed rumours of a new Boko Haram splinter cell, saying “no such group exists.”
• Kaduna: Governor Uba Sani praised coordinated DSS operations that busted a gunrunning ring in Igabi and Kachia, with seizures including AK-47s, a PKT machine gun and hundreds of rounds. “There will be no hiding place for bandits or arms traffickers,” he said.

Lingering trauma in Owo—and a collective ask

The alert revived memories of the June 5, 2022 Owo church massacre. Community groups and commuters in the flagged areas urged proactive patrols, quick response on tips, and clear public advisories.

• Report unknown faces, abandoned bags/vehicles, and night movements in bush paths or waterways.
• Use verified emergency lines; share live location on inter-state trips; avoid isolated routes after dark.
• Heed checkpoint instructions and public advisories from state commands and local authorities.
