Suspected terrorists launched a drone attack on the 27 Task Force Brigade base in Buni Gari, Yobe State, on Wednesday, according to security sources.
However, soldiers stationed at the base successfully neutralized the threat, shooting down three fighter drones deployed by the attackers.
“It seems the terrorists have adopted a new strategy—the use of drones,” a source disclosed to The Bureau Newspaper. “The attack began around 5 pm, but our troops were alert. As soon as they heard a strange noise, they responded swiftly and shot down all three drones.”
This development comes just 48 hours after another drone attack injured six soldiers at a military base in Borno State.
On Monday, terrorists targeted the Forward Operating Base in Wajiroko, Damboa Local Government Area. A military signal obtained by The Bureau Newspaper confirmed the attack, noting that it involved multiple armed drones carrying locally fabricated grenades.
The military report stated:
“At about 231300A Dec 24, terrorists launched an attack using mortars and firearms on troops at FOB Wajiroko in Damboa LGA. Troops repelled the attack, forcing the terrorists to retreat in disarray.
Shortly after, at about 231323A DEC 24, FOB Wajiroko came under another attack using multiple armed drones carrying locally fabricated grenades. Up to four armed drones were observed. Casualties included five soldiers injured and a gun truck damaged. Casualties received first aid and await evacuation for further medical attention.
General security remains calm but highly unpredictable. Troop morale and fighting efficiency are satisfactory.”
Nigeria has been battling insurgency in the North East for over 14 years, with groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) employing increasingly sophisticated tactics. The recent drone attacks signal a concerning escalation in the tactics used by these terrorist groups.
The military continues to strengthen its counter-insurgency operations to protect lives and property in the affected regions.
