The Super Falcons of Nigeria have today made history in Australia after registering a goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland in their final group stage, while the host Nation, Australia, registered a convincing four-nil victory over Canada to go top of the group.

The Super Falcons headed into the match as the group leaders, but their failure to beat Ireland coupled with Australia’s convincing win against Canada made them finish as group runners-up.

However, the team will have to wait for matches in other groups to determine who becomes their round of 16 opponent.

The result of the game means that the Nigeria Women’s team has now become the first team from the African continent to progress from the group stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup
