Lokoja, Kogi State – Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Kogi State have called on the state government to complete a rehabilitation centre that they say is crucial for their integration into society and economic empowerment.

The appeal was made by Eliazar Elukpo, Chairman of the Kogi State Disability Organisation, in a statement issued on Thursday.

PWDs Seek Economic Empowerment

Elukpo emphasized that many PWDs in Kogi have undergone training in various skills, including:

  • Barbing
  • Shoemaking
  • Hairdressing
  • Block making and selling

However, despite acquiring these skills, many are unable to start businesses due to lack of capital and proper facilities. He stressed that without a fully operational rehabilitation centre, their training risks being wasted.

“Many of us have learned trades, but we have nowhere to practice them. The completion of the rehabilitation centre would provide us with opportunities to work, rather than resorting to begging on the streets of Lokoja,” he stated.

Call for Government Intervention

The chairman urged the Kogi State Government and other well-meaning individuals to intervene, ensuring the rehabilitation centre is completed and equipped to serve its purpose.

He cited the examples of Oyo, Lagos, and Enugu States, where PWDs have access to functional rehabilitation centres, helping them gain employment and financial independence.

“This centre would give us a platform to learn more trades and become self-sufficient. Not everyone can afford higher education, but with skills and support, we can contribute meaningfully to society.”

Elukpo further stated that completing the project would demonstrate the government’s commitment to inclusivity and the welfare of PWDs in Kogi and across Nigeria.

A Call for Action

The appeal from Kogi’s PWDs highlights the urgent need for social and economic inclusion. Many hope that the government will take swift action to complete the centre, enabling them to transition from dependency to self-reliance.
