PDP BoT Moves to End Leadership Crisis, Sets Up Committee on National Secretary Dispute
The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken steps to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis within the party, setting up a committee led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, to mediate the dispute over the position of National Secretary.
The decision was contained in a 10-point communiqué issued at the end of the BoT’s 79th meeting held at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja. Reading the communiqué, BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, expressed deep concern over unresolved challenges within the party, particularly disagreements within the National Working Committee (NWC).
Call for Unity and Discipline
The BoT urged party leaders and stakeholders to set aside personal, group, and sectional interests, prioritizing the unity and stability of the PDP. It also reaffirmed the commitment to holding the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in February 2025, where pressing party issues will be addressed.
Beyond internal matters, the BoT condemned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the deteriorating economic and security situation in the country. It criticized the government’s multiple taxation policies, rising fuel prices, increased electricity tariffs, and surging telecommunication charges, which have worsened the cost of living for Nigerians.
“The APC administration lacks the required patriotism, competence, and innovative governance needed to harness Nigeria’s vast resources for the benefit of the people,” the BoT declared, demanding urgent policy reversals to stimulate economic growth and job creation.
Internal Struggles Threaten Party Stability
Earlier in his opening remarks, Senator Wabara lamented the persistent infighting within the NWC, warning that the unresolved disputes were weakening the PDP’s credibility. He urged the party’s leadership to act swiftly in resolving conflicts and maintaining unity.
“As elders and custodians of this great party, we must remind the NWC that internal conflicts, if left unresolved, only serve to undermine our collective strength,” he said.
Wabara also stressed the urgency of the NEC meeting, emphasizing that party members nationwide are eagerly awaiting it to address critical issues. He further called for transparent and credible processes in the upcoming Zonal Congresses to ensure that competent leaders emerge at all levels.
PDP’s Path Forward
Reaffirming the PDP’s role as Nigeria’s leading opposition party, Wabara called on all members to put aside personal grievances and work towards rebuilding the party’s structure.
“The PDP remains the hope of Nigerians. We must rise to the occasion and reposition the party as the true voice of the people,” he stated.
The party has been grappling with internal divisions, leading to defections to the ruling APC. However, with these new resolutions and a renewed call for unity, the PDP hopes to regain stability and reassert itself as a formidable political force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
