Frustrated women, upset that their partners have been neglecting their intimate needs due to relentless heat and ongoing electricity failures from the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED), held a calm demonstration on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.
The event saw a bit of theatrics as women from certain areas in Mile 2 and Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt, took their grievances to the PHED’s doorstep, protesting their partners’ decreased interest in intimate activities at night, exacerbated by the severe heat and what they claim is inadequate electricity provision to their residences.
According to reports from our journalist, the women paraded through streets such as Dim, Wokoma, Wokoma Lane, Obaziolu, Dim Lane, Egbuagu, Azikiwe, and Ojoto streets in Diobu, making their way to the PHED office.
Holding signs that read: ‘No Electricity No Payment’, ‘Excessive Heat,’ ‘Lack of Intimacy with our spouses due to the heat,’ “PHED, We Demand Electricity, Not Bills,” among others, the women voiced their severe discomfort.
In addition to other grievances, the demonstrators also voiced their struggles with keeping cooked meals fresh for extended periods and how their businesses have suffered due to what they describe as substandard electric service by PHED.
They articulated being caught in a triple bind, having to pay excessive estimated bills to PHED, incurring significant expenses to power their generators, and being deprived of intimate moments with their partners.
The demonstrators argued against the injustice of paying for non-existent services through PHED’s estimated billing system.
The women vowed to organize another peaceful protest should there be no improvement in their situation.
At the moment this report was prepared, no PHED representative at their Mile 1 flyover office had responded to the women’s protest.
