Obalohun of Okoloke Kidnapped in Kogi as Security Agencies Launch Manhunt
LOKOJA — The abduction of Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, the Obalohun of Okoloke and a first-class traditional ruler, has sent shockwaves through Kogi State, particularly within the Yagba West Local Government Area, where the incident occurred.
The revered monarch was reportedly abducted in the early hours of Thursday by a group of heavily armed men who stormed his palace in Okoloke, a tranquil town in Yagba West. The attackers, according to eyewitnesses, overpowered palace guards at around 2:00 a.m. and whisked the king away to an unknown destination. No contact or ransom demand has been made by the kidnappers so far.
Residents Gripped by Fear
The incident has heightened tension across Okun land, with concerned citizens gathering at the palace in prayer. The growing wave of kidnapping in the area has fueled deep anxiety among locals, who now live in fear of further attacks.
Kogi Police, Vigilantes Begin Rescue Operation
The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the abduction and disclosed that a manhunt is underway. A joint task force comprising police officers, other security personnel, and local vigilantes has been mobilized to track down the perpetrators and secure the monarch’s release.
Yagba West Chairman Condemns Attack
Tosin Olokun, Chairman of Yagba West LGA, condemned the abduction in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Adeyemi Sunday. He described the attack as “a direct affront to our cultural values and peaceful coexistence.”
Olokun noted that the increase in such criminal activity is partly due to the porous border shared with neighbouring Kwara State. “These bandits exploit forested areas around Babanla, Babasango, Ndanaku, and other hideouts to evade capture,” he said.
Call for Calm and Cooperation
The local government has urged residents of Okoloke and nearby communities to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies. Citizens were advised to report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest security outpost or traditional authorities.
“While we understand the fear this incident may cause, we appeal to everyone not to take the law into their own hands. Reprisal attacks only escalate tension and hinder rescue efforts,” the statement emphasized.
Chairman Olokun also assured residents that all necessary resources are being deployed to ensure the monarch’s safe return. He reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks and restoring peace throughout Yagba West.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with His Royal Highness and all others affected by this tragic incident. We remain confident that, by God’s grace and through ongoing security efforts, they will return safely and unharmed,” he concluded.
