Pandemonium erupted in Atan-Ota, Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Sunday following a violent cult clash that led to the death of a young man identified only as Moses.
Gruesome Killing Sparks Panic
Eyewitnesses told The Bureau News that Moses was allegedly attacked by members of the Aye Confraternity during a supremacy battle.
A disturbing video circulating online showed the cultists repeatedly hacking at the victim’s right wrist with machetes while boasting in pidgin English: “We are the ones in charge.”
Another video captured mourners wailing as they surrounded Moses’ lifeless body. One of them was heard crying in Yoruba: “Moses, my God.”
Police Confirm Incident
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Chief Superintendent of Police Omolola Odutola, confirmed the killing in a brief message: “Yes.”
Although Ogun State has recorded fewer cult-related clashes recently, the latest killing adds to the list of violent fatalities attributed to cult groups in the South-West.
Rising Cult Violence Across the South-West
The resurgence of cult clashes is not isolated to Ogun State. In neighbouring Lagos State, more than 10 people have reportedly been murdered in cult-related attacks within just 10 days.
Security experts warn that the increasing trend of violent clashes underscores the urgent need for community vigilance and stronger law enforcement strategies to curb cultism in the region.
