ABUJA — Nigeria News Today: The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the conduct of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, over his verbal confrontation with a naval officer in a viral video that surfaced earlier this week.
In the statement signed and made available to The Bureau News by NANS National President, Comr. Atiku Isah, the student body described Wike’s behavior as “disgraceful” and “unbecoming of a public official,” insisting that the officer, identified as Lt. AM Yarima from Kaduna State, was merely performing lawful duties assigned by his superior officer.
‘Wike’s conduct was disrespectful and unacceptable’ — NANS
The statement read: “The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) watched with dismay the viral video which has become a topic of discussion among Nigerians. In the video, Mr. Nyesom Wike was seen insulting an officer who was properly detailed by his superior to guard a land. The officer was carrying out a lawful order by his superior and does not deserve to be insulted.”
Comr. Isah commended the composure of Lt. Yarima during the altercation, describing him as a “disciplined and professional soldier who demonstrated maturity and restraint despite provocation.”
‘The minister acted beyond his powers’ — NANS
NANS faulted Wike for allegedly attempting to “encroach” on land belonging to a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (rtd), stressing that the issue could have been handled through proper dialogue rather than confrontation.
“It is unbecoming of the minister to speak disrespectfully to people. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) will not sit and watch those who have laid down their lives in protecting us to be disrespected,” the statement added.
‘Tinubu must caution Wike’
The student body called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately caution the FCT Minister, warning that such behavior, if left unchecked, could erode public trust in government institutions.
“We therefore urge President Tinubu to caution the FCT Minister,” the NANS President concluded.
The Bureau News recalls that the confrontation between Wike and Lt. Yarima occurred at a disputed plot in Gaduwa District, Abuja, where both parties exchanged heated words over ownership of the land allegedly linked to the retired Naval Chief.
