KARONGI, KWARA STATE — In a disturbing news update in Nigeria today, suspected armed bandits linked to the notorious Mahmuda group launched a deadly attack on Karongi town in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing one person and razing several homes.

The attackers stormed the town in the early hours of Monday while many local vigilantes were away for Eid-el-Kabir celebrations or a scheduled training workshop. Residents said the assault, which began around 6:00 a.m. and lasted until 11:00 a.m., left many displaced and terrified.

A joint response team of soldiers and vigilantes from nearby communities later repelled the assailants and restored calm.

The Emir of Yashikira, Alhaji Umoru Sariki, confirmed the attack in a telephone call, stating that “one person was killed and several houses were destroyed by the gunmen.”

While the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Kwara State, SP Adetoun Ejinre-Adeyemi, said she had not yet been briefed, the Nigerian Army’s 22 Brigade spokesman, Lt. Stephen Nwankwo, confirmed the incident: “Yes, it happened. One vigilante was killed, and several makeshift houses were burned.”

This attack marks a grim chapter in the state’s ongoing struggle with rural insecurity, especially in the northern border areas.

The Bureau News will continue to provide verified updates on the situation as more details emerge.
