A security breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, has resulted in the escape of seven inmates, following the collapse of a section of the prison’s perimeter wall.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, giving the inmates an unexpected opportunity to flee undetected.
While the exact cause of the wall collapse remains unclear, preliminary reports suggest it could have been due to environmental factors like heavy rainfall, or possibly deliberate sabotage.
A correspondent from Radio Nigeria confirmed the development, stating that investigations are ongoing.
Official Confirmation and Response
The Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, confirmed the jailbreak via a statement released by the Deputy Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar.
“A manhunt has been launched to track down the escapees. We are working with security agencies and community leaders to ensure their recapture,” the NCoS assured.
Nwakuche has also ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape. He emphasized that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if negligence or foul play is uncovered.
Public Cooperation Requested
The NCoS called on members of the public to assist with any credible information that could aid the rearrest of the fleeing inmates.
“The Service solicits the cooperation and support of the public in providing information that may lead to the recapture of the fleeing inmates,” the statement read.
As of press time, the identities of the escaped prisoners have not been disclosed, and it is unclear whether any were considered high-risk or serving long-term sentences.
Security Concerns and Background
This incident adds to the growing number of jailbreaks across Nigeria, raising renewed concerns over the state of correctional facilities, their infrastructure, and the need for improved security.
Inmates have previously taken advantage of weakened or understaffed prison conditions to stage escapes, particularly in flood-prone or poorly maintained facilities.
The Ilesa prison escape now adds to the call for urgent reform and better funding for correctional services across the country.
