The Ibaji Progressive Youth Foundation (IPYF), a Kogi State-based youth organisation, has expressed outrage over the destruction of its banners by individuals allegedly linked to the local government. The banners, displayed to promote community engagement, were reportedly torn down within 24 hours, sparking condemnation from the group.
Outrage and Condemnation
In a strongly worded statement, the IPYF described the act as a “blatant attack” on their rights to freedom of expression and community participation.
“This despicable act, carried out by thugs allegedly sponsored by the Ibaji government, is a blatant attack on our rights to freedom of expression and community engagement,” the group stated.
They further characterised the incident as part of a larger campaign of intimidation aimed at silencing dissent and discouraging their efforts to uplift Ibaji’s youth.
“We vehemently condemn this cowardly act of vandalism, which not only undermines our efforts to empower the youth but also reflects the poor governance that we have consistently criticised,” the group added.
Advocacy for Development, Not Opposition
The IPYF reiterated that it is not aligned with any political opposition, emphasising its focus on advocacy for the rights and welfare of the Ibaji people.
“Our mission is to promote positive change and development in Ibaji, and we will not be deterred by such underhanded tactics,” the organisation clarified.
Call for Accountability
The youth group demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the destruction, urging the local government to prioritise unity and development instead of resorting to divisive tactics.
“We demand the arrest of those responsible for this disgraceful behaviour and call on the Ibaji government to desist from such childish and harmful acts,” the statement read.
Unwavering Commitment
Despite the setback, the IPYF vowed to persist in its mission to advocate for the Ibaji community.
“We will not be silenced, and we will not back down,” the group declared. “Our commitment to the Ibaji people is unwavering, and we will continue our efforts to bring about positive change, regardless of the obstacles we face.”
This incident has drawn attention to the challenges faced by grassroots organisations striving for community development amidst allegations of political interference and intimidation.
