Lokoja, Nigeria — The Heavy Duty and Haulage Transport Association of Nigeria (HDHTAN), Kogi State Chapter, held a press conference today to discuss its mandate, operational scope, and pressing issues affecting the transportation and haulage sector in Kogi State.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Chukwuma Okechukwu Trust, Chairman of HDHTAN Kogi Chapter, highlighted the association’s commitment to improving the welfare of Kogites, ensuring highway safety, and contributing to the state’s economic growth.
“Our association focuses on enhancing transportation efficiency while preventing illegal activities such as multiple taxation, misuse of haulage trucks, and illicit practices threatening the sector’s credibility,” said Hon. Trust.
Achievements and Challenges
HDHTAN has recorded significant milestones, including:
- Intelligence Sharing: Preventing the diversion of goods meant for Kogi State.
- Truck Monitoring: Identifying and reporting illegal use of vehicles.
- Whistleblowing: Collaborating with authorities to expose crimes, including kidnapping and human trafficking.
However, challenges persist. The association condemned impersonation by unscrupulous elements extorting the public under HDHTAN’s guise. A notable case involves Mr. Aminu Salami, a suspended personnel now parading himself as a representative of HDHTAN.
“We are working with relevant authorities to ensure these perpetrators are brought to justice. We urge the public to report suspicious activities directly to us or law enforcement,” Hon. Trust stated.
Appeal for Collaboration
HDHTAN expressed its gratitude to the Kogi State Government, led by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, for creating a business-friendly environment. The association called for synergy with local government authorities and the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS) to address illegal taxation and improve operational efficiency.
“Our efforts are complementary to existing government agencies. Eliminating illegal levies will stabilize food prices and reduce the financial burden on citizens,” added Hon. Trust.
Commitment to Safety During Yuletide
As the festive season approaches, HDHTAN reassures the public of its dedication to road safety. Special task forces have already commenced operations, with notable success in Kabba, Kogi West. Collaboration with the Inspector General of Police Task Force and support from KGIRS further bolster these efforts.
