The Chairman of the Heavy Duty and Haulage Transport Association of Nigeria (HDHTAN), Kogi State Chapter, Chukwuma Okechukwu Trust, has clarified the organization’s role in addressing issues of economic sabotage, multiple taxation, and illegal roadblocks on federal highways within the state.
In a press briefing with The Bureau Newspaper, Trust explained that HDHTAN’s partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria is part of a concerted effort to reduce the cost of living for citizens by tackling these challenges head-on. This initiative, mandated by Presidential Order 001, aims to streamline transport logistics and curb the economic impact of illegal activities affecting Kogi State’s economy.
Strengthening Partnership with KGIRS
Trust revealed that in furthering the objectives of this initiative, he recently met with the Chairman of the Kogi State Inland Revenue Service (KGIRS). The meeting, he said, was to ensure greater synergy between the two bodies in combating economic sabotage. As a result of this collaboration, an eight-member team has been established to share critical information and work together in addressing the state’s transportation and revenue-related challenges.
“Our focus is to provide credible intelligence to authorities, preventing illegal roadblocks that disrupt the flow of goods and services. We are also committed to stopping the diversion of essential goods meant for Kogi State,” Trust emphasized.
Tackling Illicit Activities and Protecting State Resources
The Chairman outlined HDHTAN’s broader goals, which include monitoring truck usage to prevent the illegal transportation of drugs, as well as whistleblowing on criminal activities such as terrorism, kidnapping, human trafficking, oil theft, illegal mining, and road banditry.
“We are not involved in any revenue collection activities with KGIRS. Our mission is to protect Kogi State’s economy from those who engage in economic sabotage and illegal operations,” Trust stated firmly, addressing recent allegations that the organization had partnered with KGIRS for taxation purposes.
A Call for Collective Action
Trust made a direct appeal to Kogites, urging citizens to stand united against illegal taxation and other practices that hinder the state’s economic growth. He further expressed gratitude to Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and the Chairman of KGIRS for their support in the fight against economic sabotage.
“Our ultimate goal is to reduce the cost of food items and alleviate the financial burdens of the citizens. We believe that by addressing these issues, we will improve the lives of everyone in Kogi State,” Trust added.
