Former President Muhammadu Buhari has offered an apology for the challenging decisions made during his tenure, expressing his unwavering belief in Nigeria’s future. The apology was conveyed during the unveiling of books documenting his presidency, including one authored by his former media aide, Femi Adesina. The event took place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, marking Buhari’s first public appearance since leaving office on May 29, 2023. The publications launched were “Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, 2015 – 2023” and “Muhammadu Buhari: The Nigerian Legacy (2015 – 2023).”
In his reflection on his time in office, Buhari acknowledged the challenges and tough choices faced by his administration. He expressed deep gratitude to those who supported him during his presidency, including current President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Buhari extended an apology to those affected by the weight of the decisions, emphasizing that the intention was never to cause pain or anguish. He highlighted the ongoing sacrifices made by the Nigerian populace and recognized that hard decisions would be part of the nation’s development.
Buhari emphasized the importance of the published books in preserving the history of his administration. He commended their role in documenting facts, figures, achievements, and milestones for the nation. In a conversation with Femi Adesina, Buhari stressed the significance of such documentation in providing a comprehensive account of their stewardship. He underscored the importance of recorded history in countering attempts to distort or obliterate it, emphasizing that his administration operated with transparency and accountability.
Reflecting on governance as a continuum, Buhari likened it to a relay race, where one hands over the baton to the next person. He expressed support and confidence in President Tinubu’s administration, stating his commitment to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and faith in the strength, unity, and future of Nigeria. Buhari concluded by thanking General Yakubu Gowon, General I.B.M. Haruna, and Alhaji Muhammed Indimi for their support.
