On Monday, the Office of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, verified that Nadeem Anjarwalla, a jailed executive of Binance, had escaped from custody.
This was mentioned in a press release on Monday that was signed by Zakari U. Mijinyawa, the NSA’s Office of Strategic Communication Head.
According to the statement, the suspect left the nation on a plane using a stolen passport.
It was previously stated that due to the ongoing Ramadan fast, Mr. Anjarwalla, 38, managed to escape when security personnel took him to a neighboring mosque for prayers.
The NSA Office continued by saying that it worked with relevant security agencies, MDAs, and the international community to take immediate steps to apprehend the suspect after being briefed on the events.
Security services are collaborating with Interpol to obtain an international arrest warrant for the suspect, it was further said.
The statement went on to say: “A thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the suspect’s escape from lawful detention. The people in charge of the suspect’s custody have been detained.
It should be recalled that the Federal Government of Nigeria, along with other countries globally, has been scrutinizing transactions related to money laundering and financing of terrorism that have taken place on the Binance currency exchange platform.
Nadeem Anjarwalla, the regional manager for Africa at Binance and a dual citizen of Kenya and the United Kingdom, was being prosecuted by Nigerian courts prior to his flight. A Nigerian court issued a 14-day remand order, but the suspect managed to get away. His next scheduled appearance before the court was set for April 4, 2024.
We implore the people of Nigeria and the world community to offer whatever information they may have that may help law enforcement capture the suspect.
Despite not being charged with any crimes, Anjarwalla and his colleague Tigran Gambaryan appeared in court last week, and the court ordered them to stay in jail for at least two more weeks in Nigeria, according to a report from SaharaReporters.
Following Nigeria’s decision to outlaw several cryptocurrency trading websites, U.S. citizen Tigran Gambaryan, who oversees financial crime compliance for Binance, and British-Kenyan Nadeem Anjarwalla, regional manager for Binance in Africa, took a plane to Nigeria on February 26 and were arrested upon arrival.
