The push for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate individuals who were part of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is intensifying. Advocates for this action are becoming increasingly vocal about their demands.
One prominent voice joining this call is that of renowned human rights attorney, Pelumi Olajengbesi. He has advocated for a comprehensive review of the financial dealings of all officials who were part of Buhari’s tenure. This appeal has gained momentum following recent developments in the trial of Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), who is implicated in a $6.2 million fraud case linked to the previous presidential election.
Olajengbesi praised the EFCC for bringing to light the alleged falsification of signatures belonging to Buhari and former Secretary General of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, which were connected to this fraud case. He highlighted the critical need to clamp down on the boldness of those in positions of authority and their illicit activities.
The lawyer has urged the EFCC to broaden its scope of investigation beyond Emefiele, to include all significant figures from Buhari’s administration. He emphasized that setting a precedent against misconduct is crucial, and advocated for a rigorous audit to promote both transparency and accountability.
Olajengbesi’s statement underlined the severity of the issue: “The EFCC’s efforts should not be limited to former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele alone, but should extend to a full audit of key figures from former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. It’s essential to establish consequences for inappropriate actions.
“Moreover, the recent case involving the suspended Managing Director/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency, Ahmad Salihijo, accused of a N1.2 billion fraud, serves as a reminder of the widespread abuse of power under Buhari’s leadership.
“Emefiele and others who were part of the Buhari administration must undergo thorough audits and be given the opportunity to exonerate themselves, considering the extensive corruption that occurred during that period.”
