A recent DNA testing report has sparked intense national debate after revealing that one in every four Nigerian men who undergo paternity testing is not the biological father of the child in question.
The shocking findings have raised serious questions across the country regarding family trust, infidelity, and the increasing demand for paternity verification services in Nigeria.
Experts describe the trend as deeply worrying, noting that more Nigerians are seeking DNA tests to confirm paternity amid growing reports of marital disputes and mistrust.
Dr Chinedu Nwachukwu, a Lagos-based medical practitioner, told The Bureau News that the figures suggest a growing societal challenge.
“This is no longer a rare occurrence. The demand for paternity testing has increased significantly in the last five years due to marital disputes and pressure to confirm biological relationships,” he said.
He noted that although paternity disputes exist in many countries, the recent statistics in Nigeria are alarmingly high and underscore the need for more honest communication within families.
Some citizens have called on religious and cultural leaders to promote moral values and encourage transparency in marriages as a way of curbing the problem.
