Conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk, was shot dead on Wednesday during a campus debate at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem, Utah, in what authorities are treating as a targeted political assassination.
According to eyewitnesses, Kirk, 31, was answering a question on gun violence when a single gunshot rang out from a nearby rooftop, striking him in the neck. He collapsed on stage as students and security officials rushed to his aid. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The shocking incident occurred before a crowd of nearly 3,000 people, sparking panic on campus and prompting a massive law enforcement response.

Manhunt for Rooftop Shooter
Police reports confirm that the shooter fired from an elevated position near the UVU library before escaping the scene.
A female officer, captured on radio traffic, described the suspect as a male in dark tactical clothing, wearing jeans, a black shirt, and a black vest, armed with a rifle.
Although two suspects were initially detained, authorities later clarified they were not linked to the attack. The FBI has now joined local and state police in the manhunt for the killer.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the attack, calling it a political assassination that strikes at the heart of democracy.
President Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk, mourned his death in a statement, describing him as “a legend of conservative youth activism” and blaming “dangerous political rhetoric” for fueling violence.
Across the political divide, several lawmakers have called for calm, warning that unchecked political hatred risks further bloodshed in the United States.

“This was not just an attack on Charlie Kirk,” one student attendee told The Bureau News. “It was an attack on free speech itself.”
