Lt Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has reaffirmed that the Nigerian Army does not intend to end the country’s democracy under President Bola Tinubu.
The Nigerian Army would continue to protect the constitution and would not “suspend it for whatever reason,” according to Lagbaja, who declared that democracy had arrived to stay in the nation.
The COAS stated that while the military does its constitutionally mandated duties, it is the responsibility of Nigeria’s elected government to provide leadership.
As he opened the Army Headquarters Department of Military Secretary seminar in Abuja, the COAS announced this.
Therefore, Lagbaja tasked Nigerian Army leaders and soldiers to uphold professionalism and morality while carrying out their constitutional obligations.
“Permit me to take this opportunity to reiterate that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, particularly the Nigerian Army, have come to terms with the country’s choice of democracy as the preferred system of governance,” Lagbaja said, adding that the Nigerian Army continues to be the country’s agent of democracy.
Since we are representatives of democracy, we have no intention of ending it. The Nigerian Army would not, under any circumstances, suspend its defense of our constitution.
“Our political officials have a responsibility to guide while the armed forces carry out their constitutionally mandated duties. Therefore, in carrying out their constitutional obligations, Nigerian Army troops must maintain their professionalism and integrity.
