President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to approve the termination of three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Sokoto, Adamawa, and Abia States.
The request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Wednesday.
The affected RECs are Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto), who were suspended over allegations of misconduct during the 2023 general elections.
President Tinubu noted that the officials had been under suspension since March 2022, before his administration took office.
“The Senate is invited to note that the three Resident Electoral Commissioners have been suspended for misconduct since March 2022, before the advent of the current administration,” Tinubu’s letter read.
The President urged the Senate to consider the request urgently, adding that he would soon send nominations to fill the vacant positions.
