Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, provided confirmation of the incident in a statement released on Wednesday.
Akinyinka reported that the tanker lost control, collided with two other trucks, and subsequently overturned into a nearby pit before igniting, as stated by the News Agency of Nigeria.
Mr. Akinyinka reported that the incident led to the fatality of the tanker driver and caused injuries to the motor boy.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Fijabi House, Agbowo, and the Ojoo/Iwo Road Expressway. The agency was alerted to the fire incident via a telephone call at precisely 2:45 a.m.
The service promptly dispatched personnel to the location and effectively contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to the adjacent residential area. Upon arrival, we encountered three trucks positioned 20 meters apart from each other, all involved in the fire incident.
“The driver succumbed to fatal injuries, while the motor boy was successfully rescued and transported to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for medical attention,” he stated.
Mr. Akinyinka reported that the explosion resulted in the destruction of the tanker, while personnel from the agency successfully rescued the other two trucks.
“The director of operations for the agency, Ismail Adeleke, along with team members, law enforcement, and various security agencies, were present at the scene to maintain law and order,” he stated.
Last Saturday, SaharaReporters reported a tanker explosion along the Dikko-Maje road, opposite the Baddegi fuelling station in the Gurara Local Government Area of the state.
Reports indicated that individuals who congregated to collect the leaking fuel were involved in an explosion, which also impacted those trying to assist the victims.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) announced on Monday that the death toll from the Dikko tanker explosion has increased to 98.
