Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Senate has passed a unanimous vote of confidence in Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, quelling rumors of an alleged plot to impeach him. This came after Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (PDP-Kebbi North) raised concerns about reports suggesting that northern senators were behind an attempt to remove Akpabio from office.
Senator Abdullahi, citing Orders 10 and 42 of the Senate Standing Rules, denounced the rumors and reaffirmed his support for Akpabio’s leadership. He emphasized that no northern senators were plotting against the Senate President and urged unity within the Senate to counter any divisive efforts.
Abdullahi’s motion was seconded by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP-Bauchi Central), who advocated for a vote of confidence in both Akpabio and the Senate leadership, stressing the importance of unity to ensure the Senate continues its work without regional or ethnic discord.
Responding to the show of support, Akpabio expressed his gratitude and pledged to maintain the unity within the Senate. He reassured his colleagues that no external forces, including social media, would be able to break the Senate’s bond. Akpabio also promised that the Senate leadership would work hard to justify the trust placed in them.
This development strengthens Akpabio’s position as Senate President and counters any narratives of division within the legislative body.
