Peter Obi Open to Vice Presidential Role in 2027 If He Finds Better Candidate
Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has expressed his openness to considering a vice-presidential role in the upcoming 2027 general elections The Bureau Newspaper can report. Obi stated in an exclusive interview with New Central TV, monitored by The Bureau Newspaper on YouTube, that his primary ambition is to contribute to moving Nigeria forward, regardless of the position he holds.
Addressing questions about the possibility of becoming a vice-presidential candidate, Obi said, “Quite frankly, for me, I’m not desperate to be Nigerian president. I am desperate to see Nigeria work. If I see people who can do the work better, I will consider being Vice President.”
He explained that his focus is not on personal ambition but rather on the development of Nigeria. Obi emphasized that he would remain in the Labour Party but would consider alliances with other politicians whose visions align with his. “Yes, I would be here (at Labour Party), and if anybody is coming for us to negotiate or to come together, he must tell me what his purposes are,” Obi stated.
In the meantime, controversy surrounds Obi and some prominent figures in the Labour Party. The National Working Committee (NWC), led by Julius Abure, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Security Adviser (NSA) to investigate Obi, activist Aisha Yesufu, Pastor Itua Ighodalo, and leaders of the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, for alleged misappropriation of campaign funds during the 2023 elections.
At a press conference in Abeokuta, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, accused the group of diverting over N12 billion and $15 million in donations meant for Obi’s presidential campaign. Arabambi criticized Obi and others involved, describing Obi as a “political merchant” who orchestrated the mismanagement of funds.
The allegations also extended to Afenifere leaders, including Pa Ayo Adebanjo and Akin Osuntokun, who were accused of diverting over N600 million meant for campaign efforts.
